Scientists looking in to why some people age better than others have found people who carried the MC1R gene looked much younger than their real age. The MC1R gene - is critical for making melanin, which affects skin pigmentation and protects against UV radiation from the sun. But the variations of the gene also leads to red hair and freckles. The study into ageing was conducted by the Erasmus University Medical Centre in the Netherlands and Unilever and published in the journal Current Biology.
